On Friday 11th May, St. Ignatius College, Boys’ Secondary school, Ħandaq, will hold a fourteen-hour long event to raise funds in aid of Puttinu Cares Cancer Support Group. The five MPs, Carmelo Abela, David Agius, Gino Cauchi, Roderick Galdes and Philip Mifsud, all former students at Liceo Mikiel Anton Vassalli, Ħandaq, will take part in a special Duathlon Challenge as part of Festa Ħandaq 2012. Prior to the inauguration, they will cycle off from St George’s Square, Valletta to Qormi where a group of former students, teachers and parents will join them. From there on, the entire group will run the final part of the challenge to the school. The opening ceremony, starting at 09:00, will be presided over by Hon. Dr Joe Cassar, Minister for Health, the Elderly and Primary Care.

Thereafter, the school will transform itself into a hive of activities and events. These will include a two-kilometre road race and fun walk as well as many other sports activities, hair and beauty treatments, a photography exhibition, a bazaar selling clothes, shoes, books, frames and plants, a scouts parade, a historic re-enactment, food stalls, a car wash, tombola and indoor games. The evening will draw to a close with several performances by well-known local singers and dancers. All proceeds for this all day activity will go to Puttinu Cares Cancer Support Group. This year Melita will be present during the whole event offering special gifts, offers and freebies to all those visiting the van.

The Beland Music Festival is an event consisting of a full week dedicated to culture, music and entertainment. The dates of this event are from the 12th till the 20th of May 2012, and will be organised for the second time at Market Square in Zejtun, with a professional setup and with the help of the top local event organization companies. With a total area of 2400 square meters, Market Square is one of the largest open locations in the south of Malta. This whole week of activities will be on a free entrance basis. With the intent of attracting all the age groups, Beland-Events will again dedicate part of the venue for a Kids Area. This area will stay open during the whole week under the supervision of qualified child carers. Games, bouncing castles, balloons and face painting are some of the attractions which can be found in this particular area.

(Koperattiva Produtturi tal-Ħalib), the Malta Dairy Products, the National Milk Promotion Campaign, the Gozitan producers of Ħanini dairy products and various producers of Maltese cheeselets, (fresh, dry and peppered) such as Chris Zahra, Kevin Borg, Mario Cilia and Salvu Attard. Needless to say during the Milkfest visitors will enjoy a vast selection of fresh food, drinks and desserts all having one ingredient in common i.e. milk.

There will also be typical Maltese sweets and delicacies like nougat, biskuttini, kannoli and ice-cream. One will also find various stands selling local agricultural products, fruits, plants and herbs and artisan stands giving demonstrations on the crafts of handmade jewellery, filigree, loom, etc. While the activity is going on there will be a continuous entertainment programme for the whole family varying from band marches, singing, dancing, sketches, face painting, and much more.

Right in the heart of the activity, the main attraction shall be a live exhibition of milking animals (cows, sheep and goats) and an explanation on the trade of milking and the way of living of the Maltese herdsman. This exhibition will be organized and coordinated by K.P.H. (Koperattiva Produtturi tal-Ħalib). Free informative brochures on milk shall be distributed to those present. In the afternoon cows will be milked right in the square.

An innovative attraction shall be a display of Second World War vehicles, fire arms and uniforms by Battlefront group. In this background the public present will be invited to visit a wartime shelter, which, thanks to Ħal Għargħur Local Council, will remain open to the public throughout the Milkfest.

This year visitors need not worry about parking. There will be a Park and Ride System from the ex-Trade Fair Grounds Naxxar, right to the venue and back for only €1 per person.

Naturalment Malti, which is synonymous with the promotion of local products and producers, aims to highlight the benefits of consuming local milk and other dairy products and also of keeping one of Malta’s traditions, alive.
