5G: 5th generation mobile communication.

On this page we show readings taken from key locations in Malta, which clearly show emissions across Malta, including those from our Ericsson 5G network

The readings show that emission levels in Malta are a fraction of the international guideline levels, which themselves have an extremely high margin of safety, with the guidelines for the general public having a safety factor of 50.

5G use cases

5G means faster connections, greater capacity and very low latency. This enables instantaneous connectivity to thousands of new generation devices, and the opportunity to have a truly connected world. From better health care and education to safer environments and augmented realities. All this is possible with 5G.

Medicine
Medicine

With 5G and IoT devices, medical monitoring and treatments can reach the most remote parts of the world. Ericsson and its partners demonstrated the world's first tele-operated robotic surgery via a 5G network in the lab. This technology will save more lives and addresses the imbalance of medical resources across regions.

Road Safety
Road Safety

5G will make our roads safer. Thanks to 5G's low latency, autonomous vehicles will be able to respond much faster to objects and changes around them. Being much faster than any human's reflex, 5G connected vehicles can brake or change directions almost instantly in response to road signs, dangers and pedestrians.

Good for Business
Good for Business

Business will experience a tremendous positive impact with 5G. Faster connectivity enhances the efficiency of many industries with augmented operational productivity and precision. From safer and smarter factories, to more efficient farming,5G will provide real-time control over every aspect of a business.

Frequently asked questions

What is 5G?

5G is the next, or fifth, generation mobile network, coming after 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G. It not only offers much faster data download and upload speeds – it also increases network quality and capacity to such an extent that millions of devices will be able to connect to the internet smoothly.

What is the big deal about 5G?

2G revolutionised communication – at the time – by giving us the opportunity to send text messages (SMS) as well as make phone calls from our mobile devices. 3G took things a step further by allowing us to go online while 4G and 4.5G have continued to take the mobile internet to new heights. 5G gives even faster speeds, increased quality and capacity to such an extent that millions of devices are able to connect to the internet smoothly. This will enable a number of exciting advances in areas such as self-driving vehicles, remote healthcare and other uses with social, environmental and economic benefits.

My WiFi at home is on 5G already, what's the difference?

Wifi is a technology that operates on 2 frequency bands – 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The term 5G when used in the context of Wifi refers the 5GHz Wifi band.

5G, in the mobile technology context, refers to the generation of the mobile technology.

What technology is Melita using for 5G?

Melita’s 5G network is supplied by Ericsson, a Swedish multinational network and telecommunications company.  As of late 2020, Ericsson had already deployed more than 60 5G networks in more than 30 countries around the world.

How are these measurements taken?

We measure emissions at the test locations using an industry standard field strength analyser and procedure. We measure over a period of 6 minutes and take the maximum of the average readings in that period. The readings are then shown a percentage of the ICNIRP general public.

This is the same methodology used by regulators both locally and in other countries including OFCOM, the UK Government regulator.

Why are you measuring emissions?

All wireless communications, such as TV, WiFi and all mobile networks, transmit at frequencies on the radio spectrum.

For 5G we are using frequencies which have been used for a long time, meaning there is a large body of scientific research into the effects of transmitting at these frequencies, and their suitability for telecommunications use.

The measurements we are getting are a very small percentage of the recommended guidelines for the general public issued by ICNIRP, these guidelines are designed to protect our health.

The measurements on this page show that radio emissions in Malta are far below the global guideline levels set by ICNIRP, – a non-governmental organisation formally recognised by WHO.
