Melita Ltd. has accelerated its environmental commitment, submitting a commitment letter to the United Nations’ Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which works to fulfil the Paris Climate Agreement by reducing greenhouse gases to levels that would limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Melita is reducing both its direct emissions from company vehicles and its indirect emissions from electricity use, through efficiency measures and renewable electricity. Schneider Electric, a global sustainability specialist, has independently verified Melita’s calculations and progress.
The company has undertaken substantial measures to reduce emissions, including installing solar panels at its data centre and investing millions in network infrastructure to decrease electricity consumption through dynamic power optimisation in its 5G network. It has also deployed intelligent lighting and cooling systems across facilities and retail locations.
Melita initiated an electric vehicle rollout in early 2020, with plans to convert nearly 40% of its fleet to electric power during 2022. By 2025, approximately 90% of vehicles are projected to run on electricity. Additional solar farms are planned for Malta, and the company prioritises Malta-based suppliers with comparable sustainability goals.
