Sustainability Week – actions speak louder than words

Like many other future-looking enterprises, Melita Ltd has long been an environmentally aware business, but with our planet being under such a huge threat, Melita fully recognises that awareness is just not enough.

Urgent, strategic, and effective actions are needed.

We understand that a profitable business depends on healthy communities which in turn depend on a healthy environment. Without these two essential elements, healthy businesses cannot exist.

For the second consecutive year, Melita is participating in the annual Europe-wide initiative – European Sustainable Development Week (ESDW). Last year, the ESDW acted as an umbrella for 5440 activities in 28 countries across Europe. Here are a few activities that Melita’s employees will be participating in this week (19th to 25th September 2022) and working on throughout the coming weeks. All activities strategically aim at promoting one of the 17 sustainable development goals established

Watering & Weeding

In collaboration with Nature Trust, Melita employees will tend to two of Malta’s most beautiful valleys helping with the removal of invasive plant species which are harming the native natural environment and watering as needed. The campaign aims at raising awareness of the importance of the conservation of native trees and plants for a sustainable healthy environment, as well as to provide employees with the opportunity of being fully immersed in the natural habitat.

Let’s make our world greener and cleaner

During this activity, Melita employees will be collecting money to buy trees and plant them. in designated areas in Malta and Gozo to enhance our natural environment and provide a better future.

Think green – let’s make it clean

We are lucky enough to be surrounded by the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, and in this initiative, we will once again join forces with Nature trust to clean up one of Malta’s most popular and breath-taking beaches – Gnejna. This hands-on experience will also help raise awareness amongst Melita’s employees on the importance of always keeping our beautiful island and sea clean.

Reducing poverty in the community

Through this initiative, Melita employees will be facing real poverty head-on by collecting money and food and volunteering with The Soup Kitchen which provides hot meals and other support services to those who cannot afford them.

Campaign on equality & diversity

At Melita we don’t just celebrate Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), we live it! As a company we promote equality between the sexes, and make sure that our employment and recruitment processes follow these same values. We are proud that our workforce is made up of the most diverse nationalities, gender identities and sexual orientations. Melita offers flexible and individualised benefits to make sure that everyone is offered a safe work environment and the same opportunities regardless of their backgrounds and situations.

Doing our part in environmental sustainability

Environmental sustainability is not only close to our hearts but rooted in the way we do business. All our processes are scrutinized by Environmental Management to make them more sustainable. This year we aim to further reduce the use of plastic, by distributing reusable fabric veggie bags to our employees as well as to any of you who are interested. These can be collected from any one of our shops, feel free to walk by and ask but don’t leave till the end as stock is limited.

  3. Good Health and Well-Being
