What is VoLTE?

VoLTE, Voice over Long-Term Evolution is voice calls over 4G’s mobile data network. This means that, unlike 2G/3G, you can make a call while browsing the internet at the same time.

VoLTE has up to three times more voice and data capacity than 3G and up to six times more than 2G GSM. That’s why it’s sometimes called “HD Voice”.

1. Does my iPhone support VoLTE?

All iPhones launched after the iPhone 6/6+ support VoLTE, including the iPhone SE.

To check that VoLTE is enabled before travelling:

  • Tap on Settings
  • Switch on mobile data
  • Tap Mobile data option
  • Tap Voice and Data
  • Check that you have the options for LTE

When travelling, make sure LTE is selected and VoLTE is switched on.

2. Does my android device support VoLTE?

The latest mobile devices all support VoLTE, but usually, this is turned off from the settings.

To check VoLTE is enabled before travelling:

  • Open the Settings app
  • Click on About phone
  • Choose SIM Status. If you can’t find it, try pressing the search button in the app and typing SIM.
  • If the voice network type is listed as LTE or 5G, you’re good to go

If the menu is not showing from the settings, try dialling *#*#4636#*#* in your Phone. This will take you to a diagnostics page. Select Phone information, and check if LTE is listed under Voice Network Type.

3. How to access VoLTE whilst roaming

To be able to use roaming services (call, SMS and data) whilst travelling in a country where the local network operator switched off its 3G network, you need to follow these steps.

Check Phone settings

Make sure that the latest OS is installed and that mobile data is enabled.

  • Go to settings
  • choose Mobile networks, preferred network type and check that 4G/LTE is selected

When should you do all of these?

You should enable VoLTE before you travel to a country where the local roaming carrier only supports VoLTE technology. Please note that depending on your device software, the option to enable VoLTE might not be a selectable choice or visible in your phone’s settings until you arrive at the location and connect to the local network operator.

In such cases, please make sure that the step is done before leaving Malta so that your handset connects to the roaming network on 4G.
