What is VoLTE?

VoLTE (Voice over LTE) lets you make calls over 4G while using mobile data, so you can browse the internet and chat at the same time. It offers up to three times more capacity than 3G and six times more than 2G GSM, which is why it’s sometimes called “HD Voice.”

1. iPhone Support:

All iPhones from the iPhone 6/6+ and newer, including the iPhone SE, support VoLTE.

To check and enable VoLTE before traveling:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Turn on Mobile Data.
  • Tap Mobile Data Options.
  • Select Voice & Data.
  • Make sure LTE is selected.

2. Android Support:

Most recent Android phones support VoLTE, but it’s usually off by default.

To check VoLTE:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Go to About Phone.
  • Select SIM Status. If you don’t see it, try searching for SIM in the app.
  • If LTE or 5G is listed as the voice network type, you’re set.
  • If not, dial ##4636## to access diagnostics. Go to Phone Information and check if LTE is listed.

3. Using VoLTE While Roaming:

To use VoLTE when traveling, especially if the local network only supports VoLTE:

  • Make sure your OS is up-to-date and mobile data is on.
  • Go to Settings.
  • Select Mobile Networks, then Preferred Network Type, and choose 4G/LTE.

Enable VoLTE before you travel to ensure your phone connects to the roaming network on 4G. Note that VoLTE settings might only appear once you’re connected to the local network. Make sure to check this before leaving Malta!
